FAQ
Q: What is sex therapy?
A: Sex Therapy is a form of talk therapy that helps individuals or partnerships resolve or explore sexual issues or issues related to gender.
Q: I’m not having any sexual or gender issues can I still work with you?
Absolutely. Many of my clients work with me around issues totally unrelated to sex or gender. Some come to me because they are a part of a marginalized community and want to work with a therapist they can identify with or don’t have to explain orientation, relational structure, kink or gender identity to.
Q: What can I expect from therapy?
A: In our first session we will establish goals for treatment. While initial treatment goals are the north star of our work I encourage clients to bring any topics they need to process to session. Many times issues client’s have in seemingly unrelated areas tie in with the core themes emerging in goals for treatment. Once goals are established our first three sessions are devoted to gathering a background history. From there sessions are devoted to whatever issues the client wishes to address.
Some people like to create a mental outline of things they want to discuss in session but it’s not required.
Q: How long do you recommend clients stay in therapy? How often should I come?
A: Sex Therapy for couples is considered a short term solution focused type of therapy. Short meaning anywhere from 4-10 sessions. I advise people I cannot make any guarantees about how long therapy will last every person, couple, relationship is different. People seek out my services for a variety of issues how long therapy lasts can vary.
Frequency of sessions can also vary. Couples, partners often see me biweekly but are welcome to schedule weekly sessions. Same goes for individuals. Contact me for more information on session frequency.
Q: Is therapy confidential?
A: All information discussed in our sessions is strictly confidential, according to HIPAA standards. There are a few exceptions to confidentiality that are essential for your safety; I will discuss this with you during session.
